What changes between the steps

Under US$300 → US$300–650

The biggest single jump in the whole ladder. You go from a shared vehicle and simple accommodation to a private vehicle on most departures, proper tented camps inside or beside the parks, and usually one flight instead of a long drive.

If you are choosing where to stretch, stretch here.

US$300–650 → US$650–1,000

You move from the reserve to a conservancy, which buys capped vehicle numbers, off-road driving, night drives and walking. Guest numbers fall. Guiding improves as standard.

This is where the *experience* changes rather than the comfort.

US$650–1,000 → above US$1,000

Owner-run and exclusive-use camps, a dedicated guide, private flights, the lowest-density conservancies. Genuinely better, and with diminishing returns.

Where the curve flattens

Our honest view: above roughly US$1,500 per person per night you are buying scarcity, architecture and a name rather than a materially better experience of Kenya.

If your budget reaches that, we would usually put the marginal money into a private guide, an extra night, or a second contrasting park instead of a more expensive tent. That advice costs us commission every time we give it.

The trade nobody frames properly

More nights at a lower level, or fewer nights at a higher one?

Almost always the latter. Five good nights beat seven mediocre ones, and the fixed costs — international flights, transfers, the Nairobi night — are identical either way. The exception is the Masai Mara, where three nights is a hard floor.
