Kenya safari costs

Safari pricing is opaque by habit, not necessity

The unit that matters

Per person, per night, fully inclusive

Get every quote onto this basis and comparison becomes possible. Until you do, two quotes are simply two numbers.

Indicative planning ranges, per person per night, fully inclusive, land only
LevelPer person per nightWhat it buys
Camping and small-groupUnder US$300Seasonal camping or simple lodges, shared vehicle, longer road transfers. Real wildlife, minimal comfort.
Comfort to classicUS$300 – 650Solid mid-range lodges and tented camps inside or beside the parks, a private vehicle on most departures, and usually one light-aircraft hop to save a day of driving.
PremiumUS$650 – 1,000Conservancy camps with off-road driving, night drives and walking, flights between most parks, and small guest numbers.
Top endUS$1,000 and upOwner-run and exclusive-use camps, a dedicated guide throughout, private flights, and exclusive-use houses for families and groups.

Indicative planning ranges only, per person per night sharing, for a fully inclusive safari — accommodation, meals, park and conservancy fees, guiding, and transport between parks. They are what we see in the market, not a quote and not an official tariff. Your quote will be exact and itemised. International flights are not included.

The uncomfortable bit

Four ways a cheap quote is made cheap

None of these are illegal. None are visible from a total. All four change the trip you actually get.

We publish them because our own quotes are itemised, which means they can survive the comparison.

  • A shared vehicle instead of a private one — often the entire price gap
  • A camp outside the park boundary, with entry fees charged per visit
  • Driving a leg that should be flown, costing you most of a day each way
  • Low-season rates quoted against high-season dates

Before you ask

The questions we get most

How much is a Kenya safari, roughly?

For a fully inclusive safari — accommodation, meals, park fees, guiding, vehicle and transport between parks — the useful range is roughly US$300 to US$1,000 per person per night, with camping below that and the top end well above.

Seven nights in the US$300–650 band lands somewhere around US$2,500–4,500 per person before international flights. Your quote will be exact.

Why are two quotes for the same trip so different?

Almost always one of four things: a shared rather than private vehicle, a camp outside the park boundary with fees excluded, a leg driven rather than flown, or rate periods that do not match your dates.

Ask both agencies the same question — "is this fully inclusive of park fees, and is the vehicle private?" — and the gap usually explains itself.

Is it cheaper to book directly with a camp?

Rarely, and not by enough to matter. Camps generally hold rate parity, so the direct price and the agency price are much the same. What you lose is the person who arranges the flights between camps, rebooks you when a connection fails, and knows that the camp you picked is in the wrong part of the Mara for your month.

Can I do a Kenya safari cheaply?

Yes. Camping safaris, simple lodges, shared vehicles, road rather than air transfers and the green season together bring it down a long way. The wildlife does not know what you paid. What you give up is space, flexibility and comfort — for many people an entirely reasonable trade.

Do you charge for planning?

No. Sending your dates, getting an itinerary and getting a costed quote is free and carries no obligation. Money only changes hands when you decide to hold space at a camp.
